From The President...

by Bryan Hawkins, President, UKS

To be a complete Kenpoist is something that all those who train in our school should be working towards. One must keep in mind that the way of the martial artist is not just one of physicality. On a purely physical level we have forms, sets, freestyle, self-defense techniques and specialized training that we use as tools to hone our bodies into machines of destruction (obviously only to be used as a preservation device for ourselves or loved one). To achieve a certain degree of competency on a level would make us a technician; one who is physically skilled in performing their technique whether in the studio or in the street. As a student of Kenpo we must also be well versed in the historical, academic and spiritual aspects of our art. Knowing the roots of 'Kenpo Karate' in and of itself is paramount, but there is a great deal of historical significance in knowing the genesis of all forms of traditional martial arts. In the area of academics the goal of the student is, to a certain degree, to become self-correcting as soon as possible. By learning 'why' we do a movement a certain way as well as 'how' to do it will give a much deeper understanding of motion in general. A great many of the answers to 'why' can be found in Mr. Parker's Infinite Insights Into Kenpo, Volumes I-V. The information contained in these books is all the title implies. Mr. Parker put a lifetime of knowledge and wisdom in those books - let's use them to become a complete Kenpoist!
