From The President...

by Bryan Hawkins, President, UKS

“Through diligent and conscientious practice, confidence will overcome desires of aggression. Proof of your ability becomes unnecessary when you feel confident and assured of your capabilities and potential!” - Ed Parker

I recently came across this Ed Parker quote while going through some of my old training notes. Although the quote appeared in one of Mr. Parker’s publications in 1975, some 23 years ago, the message is a timeless one. For a variety of reasons we live in a society filled with anger and frustration which leads to confrontation, violence and other forms of misdirected energy. Having myself been an angry youth with a violent temper, I know of what I speak. I realized at a young age that I needed something to help curb my temper. I figured that the reason I was getting in a lot of fights was because I was never really sure I could beat the other kid - so I had to fight to reassure myself of my fighting prowess. Then one day I was struck with this revelation - if I absolutely knew I could beat the other kid then I could walk away from confrontations feeling assured of my probable victory and holding my head up high. This is another example of the many benefits of training in the art of Kenpo. Training diligently and honestly on a regular basis gives us the confidence to meet our day to day challenges, whether on the playground or in the board room and achieve the peace and harmony that is naturally ours.
