The
Technical Corner...
By Tommy Burks
Alternating Maces:
Ideal Phase of Attack: Front Step Through Two Hand Push
Name: Technique derives its name from the rythmatic
striking of the hands. Your hands Alternate: front, then rear, then front.
Theme: This technique also familiarizes us with the
importance of creating distance. You also learn to alternate your hands front,
then rear, then front as well as alternating your selected targets. This
technique introduces you to use specific weapons to specific targets in a
specific sequence of movement.
Again, remember the technique variables for consideration:
1. Main
Power Source - rotational torque
2. Control
of opponent - height, width, and depth zones
3. Method
of execution
4. Angles
of execution
5. Blocks
and checks
6. Concepts
and Principles
Some of the Concepts and Principles are:
FIRST MOVE
1. Point
of Origin (which is a principle involved in every sequence of any technique)
2. Depth
of Action
a. Create distance
3. Body
Momentum
a. Rotational
b. Gravitational Marriage
4. Stabilize
your base
a. Settle
b. Keep knees flexible
5. Angles
of Execution
a. Horizontal
b. Diagonal
6. Method
of Execution
7. Minimize
Targets
8. Angle
of Deflection
9. Anchor
a. Right elbow
10. Angle
of Cancellation
a. Height
SECOND MOVE
1. Body
Momentum
a. Rotational
2. Angle
of Execution
a. Horizontal or Diagonal
3. Method
of Execution
a. Thrusting
4. Check
a. Right arm - Pressing
5. Anchor
a. Right elbow
6. Solidify
your Base
a. Bracing Angle
7. Directional
Harmony
THIRD MOVE
1. Body
Momentum
a. Rotational
2. Angle
of Execution
3. Method
of Execution
a. Snapping
4. Checking
a. Left hand - Pressing
As always I will not give you all the Concepts and Principles,
work your mind and knowledge to add to the list.
NOTES:
1. Be sure that when you pivot into a forward bow that your rear
heel does not lift off of the ground.
2. If you execute the vertical thrust punch on the second move in
a horizontal plane, try executing it on a downward diagonal plane, and observe
the reaction of your opponent’s head position for the follow-up back knuckle
strike. Also observe how the diagonal downward strike helps control your
opponent’s height, and depth zones.
