From The President...

by Bryan Hawkins, President, UKS

I have been fond of telling my younger students throughout the years that the two primary reasons for them to practice Kenpo Karate are Self-Defense and Self-Discipline! There is much unhappiness and disharmony in the world today because of failure to control passions, impulses, appetites and tempers.

Plato divided our metaphysical self into three parts - reason, passion, and appetite - and said that correct behavior results from the control or harmony of these three elements. The journey towards self-mastery is one that every true martial artist should be on. The only way to arrive at that destination is by traveling on a path of Self-Discipine. Like anything else in life that one endeavors to achieve or excel at whether it be basketball, mathematics, linguistics, Kenpo Karate or Self-Discipline, one must practice! As Aristotle pointed out, “Our habits make all the difference!”

It is my hope that you all become habitual when it comes to practicing your Kenpo. We must practice Self-Discipline in all areas of our life, including the practice of our actual system of Self-Defense, Kenpo!

In Self-Discipline one makes a disciple of oneself!
