From The President...

by Bryan Hawkins, President, UKS

There is a Latin phrase that, translated, states, “He who seeketh peace prepareth war.” This has been a motto of ours at Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate for many years now. It remains as one of our primary philosophical tenets because history has shown us that non-aggressive peoples who display a willingness and capability to defend themselves against would-be aggressors, rarely have to. Predators in general, whether they be a lion looking for dinner, a carjacker looking for some drug money, or a fundamentalist lunatic looking for his place in history and the 72 virgins, are cowards and will only attack those that they think they can be successful against. The lion will never attack the largest, strongest gazelle, the carjacker will never try and jack a police car, and terrorist organizations will not bomb somebody if they think that somebody has the power and perseverance to wipe them off the face of the Earth.

After the terrorist attack on our soil this past September 11, it is my hope that our country has learned a tough lesson. It is a lesson that has cost us thousands of innocent lives. It is a lesson that we as Kenpoists know only too well. As a country or as an individual, walk peacefully but do indeed carry a large stick. Let us continue to stand united, because divided we most assuredly will fall.
