“Citizen Soldiers” by Stephen E. Ambrose

“Citizen Soldiers” opens at 0001 hours, June 7, 1944 on the Normandy Beaches, and ends at 0245 hours, May 7, 1945. This book, based upon hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides, reminds us that extraordinary courage under arduous conditions lies within ordinary Americans. The book itself details the difficult and often tragic process of fighting a noble war against evil. Ambrose evokes the suffering and sacrifice in obscene conditions, but pulls no punches about the horrors of war itself on the human condition. Many readers will be mesmerized how Americans drew from a well of courage and determination to counter Hitler's evil machinations of war, genocide and enslavement. The societal concept of the “Warrior” has been derided over the last decade, yet it has become more relevant than ever in a war where terrorism considers every American a target. This book is a solid reminder that we all can call up the courage to counter the present threats that would deprive us of cherished Freedoms. Every Kenpoist is encouraged to read this book as an appreciation of the sacrifice of our forefathers and to expand their notions of both the Scholar and the Warrior.
