Kenpo Family Business

by William Joseph Pemberton

One of the functions of a family is to support one another and celebrate the accomplishments of its various members. To this end, please join us in honoring the following long time members of our Kenpo family . . .

Congratulations to Steve Williams on his retirement from the Culver City Police Department. Steve has been a fixture at and great help to Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate for some years and has contributed his time and expertise in too many ways to list here from organization to transportation to construction. As a police officer he gave thirty years of his life to serving his community. Perhaps his most impressive contribution was spearheading a program designed to reclaim our at-risk youth. This program has become the prototype of many similar programs across the country. Please join us in gratitude for his many years of service and in congratulations on his much deserved retirement.

As one officer retires the Los Angeles Police Department has gained two new officers from our Kenpo family. Ruth and David Hawkins have graduated from the Police Academy and have now begun their years of service. Both distinguished themselves in their training. David won the self defense award for his class and Ruth was singled out for her exemplary work. Let us all offer our congratulations for jobs well done and wish them a safe and distinguished career in law enforcement.

Last year we lost a Kenpo brother to the Dallas Texas area when Steve Tapper moved back to his home town. Now, almost a year later, he has opened his own studio, enriching United Kenpo Systems through the addition of several new members. Those of us who know Mr. Tapper can little doubt that his new venture will be a grand success. It is doing well and promises to continue for many years as he brings Ed Parker’s art of American Kenpo to Dallas, Texas.

In all the new beginnings and additions to our Kenpo family let us not forget the newest beginning of all. Krista Idol, the wife of our own Wesley Idol III, has given birth to the couple’s first child. Addison Tucker Idol was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 9, 2003. Mother and son are doing well and those of us who have taken class with Mr. Idol can little doubt that he will be a wonderful and loving father. Best wishes to this new family for a long, healthy and productive life.

. . . Congratulations to one and all for being examples to all of us in the United Kenpo Systems. We all share in your joy and hope the same good fortune for all members of our UKS family.
