E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many, One

This of course is the motto for the national seal, selected by committee in 1776. The committee, which consisted of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin, was appointed on July 4, 1776. I’ve always been fond of that phrase, not only for its historical significance as it relates to the genesis of our nation’s philosophical foundation, but because of how it applies to our Kenpo school and its history.

Out of many martial arts systems over the last several hundred years arose one art of Kenpo Karate. Out of many martial artists over this same span of time there came one named Edmund Kealoha Parker. Out of many black belts that Mr. Parker taught over the last 40 years that he was teaching, I was fortunate enough to be one of his students. Out of many years of my own training and teaching, I bring my accumulated body of knowledge to one place, Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate.

Now, out of many excellent instructors, devoted students, and involved parents, we have developed one very good Kenpo Karate school that provides among other things clarity of mind and body in life’s sometimes murky journey. Specifically this year, I’d like to say thank you and give an extra Kenpo salute to a number of key people here at our school without whom we could not have experienced the tremendously successful year that we did: Doug Parent, David Alden, James West II, Michael Mandaville, Joanie Mitchell, Steve Sherr, Will Pemberton, Kathy Brown, and of course the lovely Melissa Hawkins.

Out of our many, I hope that we continue to produce many more quality Kenpoists by providing one very good Kenpo school for very many years to come.

Wishing you the very best for the holiday season and the coming year.
