UKS Tournament 2004

by Michael Mandaville

The United Kenpo Systems All-Kenpo Invitational Tournament this year proved as exciting as ever, with more schools participating at the event. Held at the Culver City High School gymnasium, there was fierce but fair competition from competitors in freestyle, self-defense techniques and kata.

The young people of Kenpo showed their mettle and spirit with strong focus, discipline and a keen desire to do their best in front of their peers and superiors. It showed.  They endured a challenging schedule and environment to win countless trophies based upon their study of Ed Parkeršs Kenpo Karate. They excelled both on and off the mats, with their competitive edge and sense of fair play.

There was a strong turnout among the faithful of Kenpo Karate, including Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate teachers and students. In attendance were such renowned schools as Deloa’s Kenpo Karate, CCK, Kenpo, Larry Tatum Kenpo and Robert Temple Kenpo. Eric Akutagawa’s students contributed a fine sense of competition and drive. Kenpo practitioners and historians will long recognize the participation and leadership of Mr. Willie Aguilar in the Art. His students were strongly represented in the competition.

In addition, there were new schools in attendance, including Jim Stuart’s Kenpo and Glendora Kenpo Karate. Welcome to our Kenpo Tournament. But remember that Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate Tournament will go back to its regular Spring schedule with the Tournament now scheduled for April 9, 2005. We hope to see you then.

All in all, the competition was strong. The Spirit soared. The Memory of Mr. Ed Parker was there among us, practicing what we love, what we know guides each one of us on our True Journey.
